BIOGRAPHY

angNoviadi Angkasapura grew up in a cultural melting pot. Since his childhood he draws on all sorts of papers that he accidentally gets a hold of. On the eve of his 24th birthday, he had a mystical experience that had an important impact on his life and manner of drawing. A supernatural being appeared to him, calling on him to lead an honest and patient life and gave him the name of Ki Raden Sastro Inggil. Although he was wide-awake, the encounter with the supernatural being seemed to him like a dream. He tried to grasp the creature that was clearly standing in front of him, but it just went away and disappeared. It left behind only two words written on a piece of paper: honest and patient. It was the call to live with a moral foundation in openness and equanimity.

Since the encounter with the supernatural being, Angkasapura's creative power intensified. When he draws, he always feels the being with him, an invisible companion who guides the hand, and Angkasapura never knows what he is going draw next. His works are surprising and very distinct. Their impressive power flows from a subterranean mythical stream informed by cultural constants. There are reminiscences of the scrolls of the Wayang, the traditional Balinese shadow play, and the scrolls from Java, in which stories from the Ramayana were recorded. Angkasapura, however, makes something quite separate from it, transforms the traditional symbolic and mythological elements through his very personal or rather transpersonal visual language.

Under the western viewpoint of art experts, his works were classified as Art Brut. In a short time, Angkasapura has found a firm place among the celebrated new discoveries of this art form. Yet, his drawings are also mediumistic in the sense that Angkasapura feels guided by a supernatural spiritual power. Like other mediumistic artists, he is firmly convinced that he has a mission to fulfill with his drawings, and it is this urge to create images from a transpersonal primal ground that drives him. The drawing itself is a meditative act, such as the depiction of a continued litany, a vast prayer-like narrative, in which every element refers to another. It is a self-referential inner universe for which Angkasapura is merely the messenger.
