BIOGRAPHY
Like her close friend Maria Löwstädt, Axelina Hammarstrand trained as a physiotherapist at the Royal Central Gymnastics Institute (Kungliga Gymnastiska Centralinstitutet) in Stockholm. Löwstädt introduced her to the Edelweiss Society, of which she became a member in 1895 and remained a member throughout her life. Like Maria Löwstädt, she also became a drawing medium. A few drawings as well as two excellent sketchbooks of her mediumistic drawings have survived, one of which is in the CoMA collection.
Her drawings are particularly interesting because they cover a wide range, from figurative depictions, especially portraits or bust portraits of the deceased and higher beings, to ornamental and completely abstract pictures.
No further details of her life are known.
